A Maryland woman faced multiple charges, including attempted murder, after she allegedly started a fire in her home and then sat in a lawn chair and watched it burn.

The incident happened on the afternoon of April 21 according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office. The suspect was arguing with another woman and a man before the fire, according to a witness’s video.

Sr. Deputy State Fire Marshal Oliver Alkire spoke on the incident, noting that “the 911 caller stated that [the suspect] actually went inside the house, set multiple items, multiple fires inside the house.” He added, “She then exited the house and proceeded to sit on a lawn chair where she actually watched the fire spread throughout the house.”

Gail J. Metwally has been charged with first and second-degree attempted murder, first-degree arson, first-degree assault, two counts of malicious burning first-degree, two counts of malicious destruction of property, and two counts of reckless endangerment.





The woman who was inside the home had thrown a trash can down the stairs, blocking her exit out of the building. “She almost burned to death in that house, and I’m just really thankful she’s okay,” Bernal said. She added that the fire “burned” and “singed” Holbrook’s hair.
