Ohio Teen Guilty of Murder After Crashing Car Into Building At 100 MPH

Judge Nancy Margaret Russo, an Ohio Judge, found Mackenzie Shirilla, 19, guilty of murdering two people after crashing car going 100 MPH into a brick building in July 2022.

The car crash left her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, 20, and his friend Davion Flanagan, 19, dead.

Shirilla was seriously injured, but survived after multiple surgeries, authorities said.

Shirilla waived her right to a jury trial, choosing to be tried before a judge.

“Her actions were controlled, methodical, deliberate, intentional and purposeful. This was not reckless driving. This was murder,” Cuyahoga County Judge Nancy Margaret Russo said of  Shirilla.

A few days before the crash, Shirilla, then 17, took the exact same route to plot the crime, Judge Russo added.

“This is the type of evidence you can never unsee,” Russo said. “She had a mission, and she executed it with precision. The mission was death.”

Russo and Flanagan were pronounced dead at the scene while Shirilla was unconscious and trapped inside the mangled car.

Surveillance video showing Shirilla’s car rapidly accelerating down a residential street topping out at 100 MPH was played during her trial.

Prosecutors said surveillance video showed Shirilla driving at a normal rate before turning a corner and then flooring the gas pedal before crashing into the brick building.

Prosecutors said Shirilla, 17 at the time of the crash, chose to end her tumultuous relationship with Russo by crashing into a brick building.

“There is no doubt that this happened because of the relationship with Dominic, and the defendant’s intent was clearly to end that, and she took everybody that was in the car with her,” prosecutor Michael O’Malley said after the verdict.

“She morphs from responsible driver to literal hell on wheels,” Judge Russo said.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for August 21. Shirilla’s conviction carries a mandatory life sentence, with a chance for parole after 15 years, authorities said.
