Sinead O’Connor, an Irish artist and “Nothing Compares 2 U” hitmaker, has died, a statement from her family obtained by the BBC. She was 56.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad,” her family confirmed in a statement to RTE. “Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”
No cause of death has been disclosed.
The Dublin-born singer-songwriter’s death comes a year after the death by suicide of her 17-year-old son Shane.
O’Connor shared a message about her late son, writing via Twitter: “Been living as undead night creature since. He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally. I am lost in the bardo without him.”
Sinead spoke candidly and openly about her spiritual life, political views, and struggles with mental health, which she wrote about in her 2021 memoir “Rememberings.”
In 2018, O’Connor converted to Islam and changed her name to “Shuhada.”
