James Comey left a paper trail: Memo reportedly reveals Trump asked FBI to end Flynn investigation.
The day after former national security adviser Michael Flynn offered his resignation, President Donald Trump asked the FBI chief to drop an ongoing probe into Flynn’s possible ties to Russian officials, according to a report from the New York Times.
“I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go,” Trump allegedly asked Comey in February, according to a memo written by Comey. NBC News and Reuters have both confirmed the Times’ report.
The White House rejected the characterization that the president tried to shut down an investigation.
“[T]he President has never asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn,” an official said. “The President has the utmost respect for our law enforcement agencies, and all investigations. This is not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the President and Mr. Comey.”
