Pope Francis: We Should Change Our Translation of the Lord’s Prayer
Pope Francis has called for a new translation of the Our Father, the most popular prayer in Catholicism, saying the phrase “lead us not into temptation” mischaracterizes God.
“That is not a good translation,” the pontiff said in Italian during a television interview Wednesday night.
“It is not He that pushes me into temptation and then sees how I fall,” he said, NPR reported. “A father does not do this. A father quickly helps those who are provoked into Satan’s temptation.”
Pope Francis said the Roman Catholic Church should consider a translation like the one recently adopted by the Catholic Church in France.French Catholics on Sunday accepted a new translation of the “Our Father,” which now states, “do not let us fall into temptation.”
Liturgical translations are usually done by local churches in coordination with the Vatican, Reuters noted.
