Man arrested charged with a hate crime after attacking 55 year old Asian in New York City's Chinatown

Video shared by a New York congresswoman ‘Yuh-Line Niou’ shows a man brutally punching a 55-year-old Asian woman in the face.

The video shows the woman wearing a pink shirt and white hat while carrying a bag as she walks down a sidewalk.

Alexander Wright, a 48-year-old homeless black man, was arrested in connection with an attack caught on surveillance video on Monday in New York’s Chinatown neighborhood.

Wright appears in the frame, walking past the woman, appears to aggressively punch the woman in her face. The woman’s hat flies off and the impact sends her falling backward. She then lands down a column of an outdoor dining structure.

NYPD spokesman said that the officers arrived on the scene and took the perpetrator into custody. He was later transferred to Bellevue Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

He said the victim was taken to an area hospital and is in stable condition.
